About the Event

Want to empower young people to inspire, lead and mentor their peers in STEM? Join over 1000 Young STEM Leader Delivering Centres across the country.

The Young STEM Leader Programme (YSLP) is an exciting new award which aims to spark greater interest and participation in STEM among young people in Scotland. The Scottish Government funded programme is led by SSERC and a range of partners including the four Scottish Science Centres, STEM Ambassadors in Scotland, Young Scot, YouthLink Scotland, Science Skills Academy, Education Scotland and the Scottish Mentoring Network.

As well as allowing Young STEM Leaders to develop important leadership, communication and employability skills, working towards a Young STEM Leader Award will also motivate the young people to continue to progress their STEM studies and perhaps eventually embark on a career in STEM. Above all else, this programme aims to promote STEM curiosity in young people in a fun and engaging way.

On completion of a short two hour training session you will be able to deliver the non-formal levels of programme straight away in your centre. The non-formal award is offered at Curriculum for Excellence Second, Third and Fourth Levels (YSL2, YSL3 and YSL4). Young people will receive digital badges and certificates in an award underpinned by a framework that identifies the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected of a Young STEM Leader at each curricular level.

With a mixture of individual, group and trainer-led tasks, the online session will equip you with all the tools to support young people through the award such as:

➔ Roles and responsibilities

➔ Award details including frameworks, evidence and assessment

➔ Using the website to track progress and mark evidence

➔ Making assessment decisions

After the session, you will receive digital certificates for you and your centre.

Before the session

There are a number of pre-session tasks to complete which together should take around an hour.

1. Watch the six programme information videos

2. Read the YSLP Handbook, focusing on the sections relevant to you

3. Download and familiarise yourself with the Example Logs (Non-Formal Levels)

^All of the above resources are available at www.youngstemleader.scot/resources

We look forward to seeing you online for the training session.
