#YoungSTEMLeaderWeek

2085

Imagining

27 - 31 October 2025

In 2085, the world will likely look very different. Advances in STEM will shape the way we live, learn, work and care about our planet. As SSERC celebrates it's 60th Anniversary and we reflect back, we also want to look forward. This #YoungSTEMLeaderWeek is all about imagining 60 years in the future. We want you to explore new ideas, ask big questions and share hopes for the world we want to see in 2085.

We'll be exploring five key themes:

Monday

Space 🚀

Tuesday

Power ⚡️

Wednesday

Health 💚

Thursday

Gadgets 🤖

Friday

Planet 🌍

Get involved

Take part in these daily activities themed around looking 60 years into the future and exploring how STEM could shape our world. Don’t forget to tag us on social media and share your visions for the future!

🚀

Monday 27 October

Design a postcard from space

Imagine it's the year 2085 and you're living away from Earth. Write or draw a postcard from space to someone back home, describing daily life, challenges and what you've discovered. You might want to think about:

  • What do you eat, and where does it come from?

  • How do you access vital supplies like water and air?

  • Do you travel back to Earth, and if so, how?

  • What skills would be needed?

⚡️

Tuesday 28 October

Energy source discussion activity

It's the year 2085 and the world needs a clean, reliable source of power. In groups, discuss the benefits of your assigned energy source and why it would be a superior choice to power our world in 2085.

Remember - don't just describe the energy source. You'll need to persuade your peers and could consider:

  • Why is it reliable?

  • Is it affordable, sustainable or accessible?

  • What challenges are there and how could they be overcome by 2085?

💚

Wednesday 29 October

Future First Aid kit

Use your imagination to design a first aid kit of the future. What new tools, medicines or technologies would it contain to keep people healthy and respond to emergencies? You may wish to use items or gadgets you've seen on TV, in movies or online.

You might also want to think about:

  • What items do we use now and how could they be improved in the future?

  • What problems do the items solve?

  • Who would be able to use it and would special training be required?

  • How would the items inside help someone if they were unwell?

Care Tech 2085

With advances in medicine and technology, people are living longer - but with an ageing population, it's important that people remain independent, healthy and connected.

Design a gadget that makes everyday life easier for someone in 2085 - what will it do, and how will it work?

You might also want to think about:

  • How could tech help with movement, memory or communication?

  • How easy would your gadget be to use?

  • How can medicine and technology help people live longer, healthier lives?

🌍

Friday 31 October

Planet protection politics

Imagine you are a world leader responsible for setting legislation to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In groups, discuss a new proposed law. You should think about:

  • What problem(s) does this law address?

  • Which of the UN Sustainable Development Goals will this law help with?

  • How would this law work across different countries?

  • How would this law be enforced?

  • What would be the impact of introducing this law?
